Tulsa Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery

Breast augmentation surgery is performed to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts by placing an implant behind the breast tissue. Some women choose augmentation because she feels her breasts are too small in comparison to the rest of her body. Other women want to restore their breasts after seeing changes due to childbirth, weight loss and volume loss due to aging. For these women, having breast augmentation surgery not only improves the physical appearance but also their self esteem. Of our breast augmentation patients, 80% are mothers who just want to restore a more youthful appearance to their breasts.

We strive to recommend an appropriate breast size that will fit your specific body habitus assessing the current breast volume and size compared to the dimensions of the shoulder, chest, and hip areas. We recommend conservative implant sizes. Women who elect to have large implants will most assuredly increase their chances of problems post-operatively and the desired results will be short lived. Patients should be open and thorough in discussing their expectations with Dr. Mathers. Patients also need to understand that imperfections inherent to their breasts may still be present after surgery.

We use the infra-mammary approach for placing smooth saline or silicone implants in a sub-muscular position. This approach is used by 90% of plastic surgeons in breast augmentation. The advantages in using the infra-mammary approach include easier placement for the surgeon, well hidden scars, decreases potential problems in loss of nipple sensation, and has the overall fewest number of complications compared to other techniques. In addition, post operatively, there is less pain with the infra-mammary approach. All implants are placed behind the pectoralis muscle except for isolate cases. 90% of the implant we use is the new FDA approved 3rd generation gel implants.

The surgery takes approximately one hour under general anesthesia. Patients will be observed for 1 ½ hour during recovery before discharged home to a reliable caretaker. Patients can return to work between 4-5 days according to their job description. Patients can start light exercise in 3 weeks, return to jogging in 4 weeks and light weights in 6 weeks. It may take up to 2 months for the implants to soften and drop into position.
